"Will it fall or not?": an abandoned 25-meter tower threatens residential buildings in Leme

In the village of Lema in Zuevsky District, residents are worried about the condition of an old 25-meter tower erected on Mira Street back in Soviet times to boost television reception. After the switch to digital broadcasting the structure became unnecessary and was neglected, the ONF press service reported.

The structure, built from an old smokestack, has rusted badly. Trees have grown up nearby and press against the guy wires. According to locals, the tower sways noticeably in strong winds. People fear that if it collapses it could damage cables and leave the village without internet and landline phones. But residents’ main concern is that the tower could fall onto nearby houses.

Appeals to the local administration have produced no results: the structure is considered ownerless and no one is responsible for it. The people then asked the People’s Front for help. Activists sent a request to the Zuevsky District administration, which promised to quickly find an owner and take action.

Valeriya Cheremisinova, head of the regional branch of the People’s Front, stressed that the authorities should assume responsibility for the tower and dismantle it, otherwise no one will take responsibility for the hazardous structure. If the issue is not resolved soon, the ONF intends to appeal to the prosecutor’s office.
