      Kirov’s Rodina played its second home match in the national bandy championship. Surprisingly, the official season opener was decided to be held today rather than last Saturday, when the debut game took place.

      Rumour had it the governor was expected at the ceremony, but he was tied up by a live Q&A, so Deputy Chairman Kurdyumov came to congratulate the players and fans. The head of the Lepse plant, Gennady Mamaev, also gave a speech and was greeted much more loudly — bandy fans know it is largely thanks to his efforts that Rodina is still in the Super League.

      The match itself against Sibselmash drew 2,700 spectators. They saw an entertaining and high-scoring game. By the middle of the first half Rodina led 2–0; the visitors cut the deficit to one, but before the break Rodina restored the two-goal lead, 3–1.

      At the start of the second half the teams exchanged penalty goals. In the 59th minute Rodina made it 5–2. Despite numerous chances for both sides, the score did not change for the remainder of the game.

      In the standings the Kirov side sit in sixth place — inside the playoff zone.
