A prisoner in Kirov Oblast carved bogatyrs, horses, and elephants.
In the Kirov Region, an inmate made an unusual set of chess pieces crafted in the form of a fortress with lighting. All the pieces are completely carved from wood.
The chess pieces are fashioned as Russian bogatyrs, standing shoulder to shoulder, guarding the king and queen, and the board features an expertly crafted knight and bishop. The board itself is a box with separate slots for each piece, and a velvet lining protects them from damage.
According to the press service of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Kirov Region, souvenirs made by inmates are attracting growing interest. Paintings and board games such as backgammon and chess are particularly in demand.
