Depression is not just sadness: a doctor explained how simple habits can help prevent the condition.
Self-care and timely seeking of help are the main ways to prevent the development of depression, said Galina Martovetskaya, the chief freelance psychiatric specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Kirov Region and deputy chief physician of the V.M. Bekhterev Center for Psychiatry and Mental Health.
According to the specialist, depression is not just sadness but a serious disorder that affects emotions, thinking, and behavior. The illness lasts more than two weeks and requires professional treatment. Among the main signs are a depressed mood, loss of interest in life, persistent fatigue, sleep and appetite disturbances, feelings of guilt, and thoughts of worthlessness.
If a person suspects they have depression, they should see a medical psychologist or psychotherapist as soon as possible. Only a doctor can make a diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.
Martovetskaya emphasized that depression is becoming increasingly common today, including among adolescents and the elderly. However, attention to mental health is also growing: therapy methods are advancing, new medications are being introduced, and preventive efforts are being strengthened.
To prevent the development of depression, the psychiatrist advises avoiding physical and emotional exhaustion, taking care of oneself and loved ones, exercising, eating properly, and resting.
