How animals helped to Win: from sapper dogs to elephant rescuers

"We explain.Russian Federation" told what role animals played during the Great Patriotic War. Their contribution to the Victory turned out to be much more significant than it might seem at first glance.

About 2 million horses were deployed at the front. They pulled artillery, delivered shells and food, and participated in battles with cavalrymen. One of them, a stallion named Kerch, became a real scout: accidentally finding himself in enemy territory, he carried a German soldier towards the Soviet positions.

Dogs also played an important role. About 60,000 dogs served in the army: they carried out the wounded, laid cable communications, and cleared mines in cities. According to "We explain.the Russian Federation", the dogs laid 8 thousand kilometers of cable, carried 700 thousand people from the battlefield and participated in blowing up enemy tanks.

In the rear, cats guarded warehouses and businesses from rodents, protecting products and preventing the spread of infections. And on the southern fronts, due to the lack of transport, camels were used. The animals, who arrived from the Astrakhan region, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, pulled cannons, delivered food and field kitchens. Some camels even raised their voices on command, "inviting" the soldiers to lunch.

In the north, in the Arctic, deer have become indispensable. They moved through the deep snow, delivered mail and ammunition, and took out the wounded. Due to their noiselessness, they were also used in reconnaissance.

Even the animals from the Moscow zoo did not stay away from the fight. In July 1941, during an air raid on Moscow, one of the elephants saved his relatives by extinguishing a bomb with water from a moat.
