American Robert Prevost has been elected the new Pope

On Wednesday, May 8, Cardinal-Protodeacon Dominic Mamberti announced the name of the new Pope on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. 69-year-old American Cardinal Robert Prevost became the head of the Roman Catholic Church. He took the papal name Leo XIV.

Prevost is a member of the Order of St. Augustine, who previously served in Peru, and in recent years has headed the Vatican department responsible for appointing bishops around the world. His candidacy was considered among the six main contenders for the throne of Peter the Great.

The conclave, attended by 135 cardinals under the age of 80, began on May 7 at the Sistine Chapel. In the early days, the vote did not yield results — the candidate had to receive at least two-thirds of the votes. It was only on the morning of May 8 that white smoke rose over the Vatican, a sign that the Pope had been elected and had agreed to lead the church.

The new pontiff replaced Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 89. The funeral was held in the Vatican on April 26. Francis, who was elected in 2013, became the first Latin American Pope in history.
