The extensive experience gained at the Vyatka State University Faculty of Linguistics in translating and analyzing German-language text documents has allowed students and their mentors to reach a new level. The next stage of the work will be cooperation with the State Film Fund in the Russian Federation, in which future translators, under the guidance of teachers, will turn to German archival newsreels dating back to the period of the Great Patriotic War.

The German military archival newsreel, stored in the Gosfilmofond of Russia, is a unique historical source. It contains important information about military operations, propaganda, the life of soldiers and civilians, as well as technical and tactical aspects of wartime," said Olga Baykova, Head of the Department of Linguistics and Translation at Vyatka State University.

The professor emphasized that the translation of German military newsreels from the main film archive of Russia has exceptional scientific, educational and cultural value. This activity allows us to expand access to unique historical sources, helps preserve the memory of the past, helps to resist the falsification of history, and ensures the relevance of research in the context of modern challenges.

Photo: vyatsu.GEEK the third-year students of the "Translation and Translation Studies" course (with two foreign languages) have already started work. Among them are activists of the student scientific circle "Lingua" Maria Kuznetsova, Evelina Bogatyreva, Polina Mutnykh, Ignat Zorin, Andrey Bezborodov.

The students reported that the trial version was excerpts of German newsreels from 1941-1942, taken from open sources. The translators completed the task successfully.

Immersion in military subjects and studying archival chronicles is a useful experience. As one of the features, I noted the speaker's very clear speech. The translation of newsreels significantly expands the vocabulary," said Andrey Bezborodov.

Answering a question about using a neural network, the student explained:

      — The neural network translates many texts at a fairly high level. However, this does not apply to documents like the ones we are currently working with. The war newsreel contains many terms and special vocabulary. The neural network either ignores them or translates them incorrectly. And we need extreme precision. Therefore, one cannot do without an interpreter as such.

The commitment to absolute accuracy in translation is fundamental. This was confirmed by senior lecturer Yulia Zhilina:

      — It is important for us to do our work in such a way that any possibility of falsification of history is excluded. On the contrary, we strive to preserve historical memory for future generations. Students are given a unique opportunity to contribute to this task.

Evelina Bogatyreva noted the importance of joining a new stage of translation activity. She, like her classmates, had previously translated a lot of German–language archival documents from the war.

The experience she already has in translation and, starting this year, writing subtitles is an opportunity for us translators to broaden our horizons in our work. A new field is opening up for us, which we are beginning to explore. It's actually very interesting," Evelina shared.

Students will travel to Moscow, where they will be able to fulfill their tasks as part of their internship.

It is symbolic that the work begins on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, achieving not only educational and scientific goals, but also being an effective component of the patriotic education of students.

A new educational cluster of the federal project "Professionalism" will be created on the basis of Vyatgudeti College with special needs attended a master class on creating perfumes in the Botanical Garden of VyatGU
