The Bank of Russia has started developing a new 500-ruble banknote.
The Central Bank has started developing an updated design of the 500-ruble banknote. Work on the modernization of banknotes in denominations of 10 and 50 rubles will begin in 2026, Interfax writes, citing Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Sergey Belov.
The deadlines for the introduction of upgraded banknotes in denominations of 10, 50 and 500 rubles have been adjusted. This is due to a change in the approach to their development, which now includes a more open procedure for selecting symbols for the image on banknotes. The issue of these updated banknotes is planned to be carried out until 2028.
In parallel, work continues on an updated 1,000-ruble banknote. The artists of Goznak and the Bank of Russia have already prepared sketches of the design of this banknote. The final decision on the approval of the design will be made by the Board of Directors of the Bank of Russia. The presentation of the new thousand-ruble note to the public is scheduled before the end of 2025.
