Kirov residents were told how not to become a victim of a moose during the rutting season.

      Specialists from the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Kirov Region have prepared a memo for residents of the region ahead of the moose rut. This period, when animals seek partners for mating and compete with rivals, begins in late August to early September, with its peak traditionally occurring in the second half of the first autumn month. The mating season fully concludes around mid-October.

      The agency clarifies that the timing is not strict. If autumn turns out to be early and cold, the rut will shift to earlier dates. Conversely, prolonged warmth can delay the start of the process.

      Particular attention in the memo is given to the behavior of moose. During the mating season, males become hyperactive, covering dozens of kilometers in search of females. They actively announce their presence to others: breaking branches, trampling grass, digging holes in the ground with their hooves, and leaving scent marks. This attracts females while simultaneously demonstrating strength to competitors. Additionally, in the forest, one can hear a characteristic low moan — this prolonged sound carries for hundreds of meters. At the peak of the rut, males lose their usual caution and respond less to external stimuli.

      Females during this period behave less provocatively. They are not as conspicuous but also become more noticeable than usual: moving around the area, attracting males while avoiding overly persistent suitors.

      The main cause for concern is the weight of an adult male, which can exceed 500 kg. Combined with a hormonal surge, this makes the animal extremely dangerous to humans. The Ministry has formulated clear safety rules.

      First — do not approach a moose, even if it appears calm. At the slightest sense of threat, the animal can attack in an instant. Second — do not attempt to take photos or videos from close range: any sudden movement or flash can provoke aggression. Third — if a meeting has already occurred, under no circumstances should one run away. It is necessary to slowly retreat to cover — for example, to a thick tree — trying not to turn one's back on the animal.

      Separate recommendations are given to motorists. During the rut, moose often come onto roads, including at night. Drivers are advised to reduce speed in areas marked with "Wild Animals" signs and be prepared for the animal to appear suddenly.

      The Ministry emphasizes: the rut is a natural process that ensures the reproduction of the population. It is during this time that natural selection occurs — the right to continue the lineage is granted to the strongest and healthiest males. However, for humans, this period requires heightened vigilance. Adhering to simple rules, specialists remind, can help avoid tragic consequences.
