Doctors at the Kirov Regional Clinical Hospital saved a patient with a very rare lung disease. They performed a lung washing procedure that took almost 10 hours in total. This was reported by the Ministry of Health of the Kirov Region.
The woman was diagnosed with alveolar proteinosis — a pathology in which a protein substance accumulates in the lungs, disrupting gas exchange. The disease occurs in only a few people per million and, without timely treatment, can lead to severe respiratory failure.
The only effective treatment method is total bronchoalveolar lavage. During the procedure, under general anesthesia, one lung is filled with warm saline solution and washed while the other is artificially ventilated with an oxygen mixture. Each procedure requires up to 20 liters of saline solution.
A few years ago, specialists faced an even more complex case. The patient was admitted to the hospital in extremely critical condition after three years of treatment at a federal center. The woman constantly needed oxygen support, and the disease continued to progress.
The medical team decided to conduct a series of five total lavage procedures over the course of a month. The patient spent more than three months in intensive care, but her condition was stabilized. Subsequently, the woman was discharged with significant improvement in her well-being.
