The beginning of summer is a traditional time for conducting biotechnical work in hunting grounds. One such activity is the creation of dust baths, where game birds "bathe" in dry sand or ash. The procedure helps the birds clean their feathers and skin from external parasites, and the layer of dust serves as a preventive measure against the emergence of new insects. During rainy periods and in low-lying areas where there are no natural sandy outcrops, dust baths become especially important.
Typically, a dust bath consists of a pile of sand, sometimes with the addition of ash or powdered sulfur for more effective pest control. To protect it from rain, it is recommended to cover the structure with a canopy. In the central region, game birds use such places from August until the snow falls. Dust baths are placed in sunny clearings and near berry bushes. They are often combined with gravel beds.
In the Kirov region, more than a thousand dust baths have already been created in hunting grounds. This helps improve the living conditions of game birds and maintain a stable population of black grouse, hazel grouse, and capercaillies.
