Ghost Hunters: how and when to see silver clouds over Kirov?

      Summer is a season not only for vacations and barbecues but also for a unique astronomical phenomenon. Noctilucent clouds (or mesospheric clouds) appear at an altitude of 80–85 km. For comparison: regular rain clouds exist in the troposphere, up to 10–12 km. Where noctilucent clouds are born, it is almost a cosmic vacuum, and the temperature drops to -120°C. Ice crystals settle on meteor dust, creating a glowing "watercolor" pattern.

      Geography matters: why this is important for residents of Kirov

      We are located approximately at the 56th parallel (Kirov — 58° N, the region — from 56° to 61°). This is the "golden mean" for observations. Too far south (south of 50°), they are hardly visible, and beyond the Arctic Circle, due to the white nights, the contrast is weaker. Our strip is one of the best on the map of Russia for hunting this phenomenon.

      Hunting calendar for the Kirov region

      Season: from late May to early August. Peak activity: traditionally the second half of June — July.

      This year, due to the cold prolonged spring, the first "horns" of noctilucent clouds in the region may shift to early June, but by mid-month they will already be the rightful owners of the night sky.

      When, where, and how to watch?

      The main rule is that the sun must be below the horizon but illuminating the clouds from below. Therefore:

      In the evening: 30–60 minutes after sunset (from 22:30 to 00:00)

      In the morning: one hour before sunrise (from 01:30 to 03:00).

      Where to look:

      to the north (where we have Slobodskoy, Yury, Belaya Kholunitsa). Noctilucent clouds look like wavy silvery-blue lines against the dark background of dawn. Unlike regular dark clouds, they glow. The "shadow of the Earth" — a dark band at the horizon — will separate them from the lower layers of the atmosphere.

      Advice for residents of Kirov:

      go out of town. Within the city limits of Kirov (Fileika, Chizhi), light pollution from the city can kill the contrast. Ideal spots are the high bank of the Vyatka River near Makarye or fields towards Kirovo-Chepetsk.

      Life hack for the observer

      If you see regular tropospheric clouds — they will look like dark silhouettes against the dawn.

      But if you notice glowing blue streaks above them — that is exactly what you are looking for.
