"Safe Scanning": A family from Kirov lost 6.4 million rubles

      A 44-year-old resident of Kirov reported to the police that scammers had stolen over 6.4 million rubles from his apartment by gaining the trust of his teenage daughter.

      It all started with an early morning call to the girl. An unknown person introduced himself as a delivery service employee and informed her that a package had arrived in her name, but the QR code supposedly could not be read. To "confirm" this, he asked her to provide personal information, and the schoolgirl complied.

      After that, other people began to call her — they introduced themselves as employees of "Gosuslugi," Rosfinmonitoring, and the FSB. The girl was convinced that a power of attorney for financial transactions had been issued in her name in favor of a citizen of Ukraine suspected of terrorism.

      To "avoid a criminal case," the teenager was offered to urgently "cancel the power of attorney" and conduct "declaration of funds." Meanwhile, the scammers constantly intimidated the girl with threats of searches and detention.

      At the direction of her interlocutors, the schoolgirl arranged a real "video search" of the apartment for them. During the filming, her parents' safe appeared in the frame. Then one of the callers stated that it needed to be "scanned" and that access to a specialist would be required for this.

      The girl informed the scammers when no one would be home, turned off the alarm system, and left the keys under the doormat at the door. While the owners were away, an unknown person entered the apartment and took 6 million 400 thousand rubles from the safe. All this time, the scammers remained in contact and assured the schoolgirl that the "scanning procedure" was underway, and the keys would supposedly be returned to her later. After the theft, communication with them was cut off.

      The police opened a criminal case under the article on fraud in especially large amounts. Later, operatives detained a suspect — a 19-year-old resident of Tula.

      According to the detainee, he was also called by fake security service employees who convinced him that he was allegedly connected to terrorists. To "atone for his guilt," he was instructed to carry out several tasks, one of which was a trip to Kirov. He handed over the stolen money to an unknown person in Kazan.

      The police are currently identifying all participants in the scheme and continuing the investigation.
