Amateur meteorologists reported an "extremely powerful" lightning strike in the Nagorsk region.
Today, May 15, at around 3:03 PM in the Nagorsk district, a lightning strike with a current of 234 kiloamperes occurred. This was reported by the public group "Amateur Meteorology in Kirov." According to meteorologists, this is an extremely powerful lightning strike. For comparison, the average current in a lightning strike is about 30 kiloamperes. Lightning strikes with currents over 100 kiloamperes are considered very rare and powerful. A measurement of 234 kiloamperes is almost eight times the average value. "Such discharges are called 'superbolts,'" the authors of the public group shared. "They can cause serious destruction, melt metal, and instantly split large trees." Amateur meteorologists added that in 2026, lightning strikes with currents of 400-500 kiloamperes were recorded in Russia near Sochi.
