Foci of hantavirus have been found near the Kirov region.
From January to April 2026, 52 cases were registered in the neighboring region — 1.5 times more than the previous year. The disease was detected in three cities and 11 rural districts. Epidemiologist and RAS academician Gennady Onishchenko spoke about natural foci of hantavirus in Udmurtia and other regions of Russia. In the Volga Federal District, he also highlighted Bashkortostan and Penza region, as reported by "Kommersant." The Kirov region still belongs to areas with a high risk of HFRS infection, according to earlier data from Rospotrebnadzor.
How it is transmitted and manifests
Hantaviruses are primarily transmitted to humans through airborne dust — by inhaling dust containing dried excretions from infected rodents. Infection can occur while cleaning in barns, basements, summer cottages, or in the forest. The virus is not transmitted from person to person (except for the rare "Andes" strain, which is not found in Russia).
The first symptoms appear in the 2nd to 3rd week after infection and resemble flu: a sharp rise in temperature, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, weakness, and chills. Then, back pain may develop — a sign of kidney damage — and in severe cases, blood in the urine. If the lungs are affected, shortness of breath and cough develop.
There is no specific treatment or vaccine for hantavirus. Therapy is aimed at alleviating symptoms, detoxification, and maintaining kidney and lung function.
How to protect yourself
Rospotrebnadzor recommends:
- regularly ventilate rooms and only do wet cleaning (dry cleaning raises dust with the virus into the air);
- use a mask or respirator and rubber gloves when cleaning in basements, barns, or summer cottages after a long absence;
- store food and water in closed containers that are inaccessible to rodents;
- seal gaps in houses and outbuildings to prevent mice and rats from entering.
The appearance of the first symptoms (high temperature, headache, back pain) is a reason to immediately consult a doctor.

In Udmurtia, bordering the Kirov region, epidemiologists are recording an increase in cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), which is commonly referred to as "mouse fever."
