Kirov doctors took the risk of delivering a baby for a 37-year-old woman with a fatal pathology.
An extraordinary case occurred at the Kirov Regional Perinatal Center. A 37-year-old woman, expecting her fourth child, faced a choice: to go to the Kulakov National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics in Moscow to give birth or to stay in Kirov. The patient categorically refused hospitalization in the capital.
The problem was that the woman was diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening pathology — central placenta previa with its invasion into organs. With such a diagnosis, natural childbirth is impossible, and a cesarean section poses a risk of uncontrolled bleeding and the removal of the uterus. In global practice, this is one of the main causes of maternal mortality.
Since the 34th week, the mother of many children was kept under observation in the pathology department. Federal experts, with whom the tactics were coordinated, strongly recommended transferring the woman to Moscow. The patient responded with a refusal.
"Since the woman remained in the region, the council of doctors decided to operate here. But this required the involvement of a urologist from the Emergency Medical Care Hospital," the medical institution explained. Such operations at the perinatal center began in 2021, but this level of complexity is still associated with a high risk.
The surgical team, consisting of obstetrician-gynecologists, an invited urologist, anesthesiologists, and neonatologists, performed an organ-preserving intervention. The doctors managed to save not only the life of the mother but also her reproductive system, although the initial prognosis was not encouraging.
As a result, a boy weighing 2870 grams was born. The mother and newborn were discharged home only after a month — the recovery after the operation was that difficult.
The perinatal center claims that in 91% of similar cases, specialists manage to preserve women's health. However, in this situation, the key factor was not the technical equipment but the patient's consent to risky childbirth on-site and the coordinated work of a medical team from two different institutions in the city.

Kirov doctors took the risk of delivering a baby for a 37-year-old woman with a fatal pathology.
A resident of the Kirov region with a diagnosis of "placenta accreta" declined the offer to be admitted to the federal center named after Kulakov, insisting on giving birth at the regional perinatal center. Doctors had to urgently involve a urologist from another hospital to perform a complex procedure and save the woman from fatal bleeding.
