VTsIOM: every third Russian believes in forest spirits.
Most Russians believe in the existence of the supernatural. This conclusion was reached by analysts from VCIOM based on a survey among the country's residents.
Thus, every third respondent believes in forest spirits, and every fifth believes in mermaids. Moreover, even more people are convinced of the existence of higher powers: about two-thirds of those surveyed believe that certain spiritual guardians can protect a person.
Faith in household spirits is equally popular. Almost every second participant in the survey admits that a spirit may live in their home, watching over order and protecting the family.
Russians also believe in unusual human abilities: about half of the respondents are confident that there are those who can predict the future.
Interest in mysticism is also evident in everyday life. Half of the respondents read horoscopes or consult astrologers, while about a third have tried fortune-telling. At the same time, fewer people turn to healers and priests — such experience is reported by only one in seven.
A quarter of those surveyed wear charms or amulets associated with "protection" from otherworldly forces.
At the same time, the overwhelming majority — 96% — believe that faith in such things is a personal matter for each individual, as long as it does not harm others.
The survey was conducted in January 2026 among 1,600 adult Russians.
