Canine specialists explained why dogs damage furniture and bark incessantly.
Boredom in dogs can lead to destructive behavior that owners often misinterpret. As explained by the Russian Cynological Federation, this is not simply a lack of entertainment, but a deficit of physical and mental stimulation that is not normal for the animal.
Most often destructive behavior manifests itself in the damaging of objects and furniture, continuous barking or whining. Owners often explain such actions as “revenge” or poor training, but in reality it is a way to let out pent-up energy.
“Destructive behavior most often appears in the destruction of items, toys and even furniture. Continuous barking and whining are also manifestations. Owners often attribute such actions to revenge on the part of the dog or poor upbringing, but in fact this is merely the animal’s attempt to discharge accumulated energy,” said Vladimir Golubev, president of the Russian Cynological Federation.
According to specialists, most dogs, especially puppies, need not only regular walks but also mental stimulation. If the need for activity is not met, especially when a pet is left home alone, boredom combined with stress can develop into destructive actions.
Common forms of destructive behavior also include compulsive actions — senseless barking, digging at carpets, toileting in inappropriate places, and escapes. In addition, dogs may display uncontrolled activity — sudden running in circles or around the apartment, known as “zoomies.”
To avoid such problems, cynologists recommend tailoring the amount of physical and mental exercise to the breed and the individual characteristics of the animal. Besides walks, it is important to keep the pet occupied at home — using durable and “interactive” toys, and regularly carrying out training.
At the same time, specialists emphasize that signs of boredom can resemble manifestations of separation anxiety, socialization problems or health issues. When getting a dog, it is important to take the owner’s lifestyle into account and understand that even less active breeds require regular attention.
