2025 nearly broke a climate record: the year became the second-warmest in Russia.
According to the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, 2025 ranked as the second warmest year in the entire period of regular meteorological observations, which have been conducted since 1891. The absolute record still belongs to 2020 — when the country’s average annual temperature exceeded 0 degrees for the first time. In 2025 a record high average air temperature was recorded for the European part of Russia. In the Asian part of the country the past year also entered the top five warmest years on record. 2025 was especially warm for the Volga and the southern Far Eastern federal districts, as well as for Moscow — where it was a record year. The year ranked second in warmth in the Central and Northwestern federal districts, and third in the Siberian and Southern districts. Against the backdrop of global processes, 2025 was also one of the warmest years for the entire Northern Hemisphere. The average temperature, calculated to an accuracy of 0.1 degree, places it in second–third place in the global ranking of the warmest years. The absolute global record, however, remains with 2024.
