"The Big Nest" saved two wood pigeons
As reported by "Big Nest," this year they received two wood pigeons, or wild pigeons. Both were rescued.
"The first bird was in very bad shape — severe emaciation, green watery droppings, refusal to eat and, on top of all that, a broken leg, such that the foot was turned the wrong way," the center's staff said. "Because of its serious condition, the fracture had to be treated conservatively with an immobilizing bandage. They force-fed the pigeon and gave it a lot of medication. And it got better! The leg healed, but of course it now limps badly."
The second bird was brought to the center later. People had picked up the wood pigeon because it could not fly and kept it in a greenhouse. The bird never started flying, so it was brought to the "Nest." It turned out to have a dislocation of the shoulder joint.
"Both wood pigeons will no longer be able to live in the wild, so they will stay with us," the center's staff added. "They are very skittish birds, so rehoming them to private homes is out of the question. We have allocated an aviary for the pigeons where the two of them can be comfortable away from human eyes."
