Scientists have identified an unexpected sign of longevity.
Researchers at the Intermountain Health clinic (Salt Lake City, USA) analyzed data from 40,000 patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease. All participants underwent a PET/CT stress test — a modern method that can detect hidden pathologies, inflammation, and tumors.
This was reported by Gazeta.Ru, citing data presented at the American Heart Association (AHA) conference.
It turned out that among nearly eight thousand people without signs of calcium in the arteries, the risk of premature death was two to three times lower than in patients with vascular calcification.
At the same time, the study showed that only a quarter of deaths among people with calcium deposits were related to cardiovascular disease. The rest were due to other causes, which remain unclear for now.
“We do not yet know exactly why the presence of calcium in the arteries is associated with mortality from non-cardiac causes. The next step will be to study the exact mechanisms and classify causes of death,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Anderson, MD, the study’s lead author.
The results presented at the AHA may change approaches to the early diagnosis and prevention of premature death.

Scientists have identified an unexpected sign of longevity.
The absence of calcium deposits in the coronary arteries not only reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease but also decreases the likelihood of premature death from any cause.
