Kirov residents are being asked to help record a "prehistoric plant".
The Kirov Region’s Ministry of Environmental Protection spoke about the most primitive of the ferns that have survived to the present day — the Virginia grapefern. As the region’s Ministry of Natural Resources explained, the history of this ancient plant began approximately 400 million years ago.
"This plant has no leaves. What appears to us as leaves is actually a system of branches arranged in a single plane; it is also called a flat-branch, a pre-shoot, or a frond," the ministry noted.
The Virginia grapefern is distinguished by the largest and most deeply divided flat-branch. Therefore, in its non-spore-bearing state it is very difficult to distinguish from other, larger ferns, and at a glance — even from some plants of the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family.
In the Kirov Region this ancient fern grows on moist, tall-grass glades and forest edges in spruce and birch woods. It is protected within the "Bylina" nature reserve. If this ancient plant is found, Kirov residents are asked to report it to the Kirov Region’s Ministry of Environmental Protection so its population can be recorded.
