Scientists have identified herbs capable of slowing the replication of the influenza virus.

Oregano, licorice and rosehip, along with other medicinal plants, were included in the effective mixtures, Monavista reports. In laboratory experiments two of the three formulations showed pronounced antiviral activity. The authors note that such combinations of herbs not only slow viral replication but also strengthen immunity, making them promising for use as part of combination therapy.

The study was conducted jointly with the N.F. Gamaleya Research Center and Sechenov University. The most effective blend was an 11-component mixture that included rosehip and viburnum berries, licorice roots, nettle leaves, oregano and other plants. According to the scientists, oregano demonstrates activity against several strains of influenza A, including H1N1, H5N1 and H3N2.

Experts emphasize that the mixtures have low toxicity and can be used at safe concentrations, which is especially important for patients for whom synthetic drugs are contraindicated.
