Astronomers have recorded the most powerful solar flare in the past two months, an M4.6-class flare. According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the peak emission was registered on the morning of August 25 at 08:24 Moscow time. The event was classified as category four on the current five-point scale. The Sun’s active regions are not currently directed straight at Earth, but their positions may change within the next 24 hours. According to scientists’ forecasts, the first peripheral effects of the plasma ejection may have occurred on the evening of August 25, while the main impact is expected today, August 26.
Experts also noted that on August 20 the Sun ejected one of the largest prominences in recent years. Its mass was so great that at one stage it even exceeded the dimensions of the star itself. Preliminary calculations indicate the ejection will pass by Earth.
