Tomorrow Orthodox Christians will begin the Dormition Fast.
As reported by the Vyatka Diocese, the Dormition Fast is the third of the multi-day fasts. The fast's dates are fixed — from August 14 to 27.
The fast is dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos, and its last day is the eve of Her Dormition, which is observed on August 28. According to tradition, before her Dormition — her peaceful passing — the Mother of God fasted and prayed to the Lord with great intensity. In its strictness the Dormition Fast is equated with Great Lent. Meals during the Dormition Fast exclude meat and meat products, fish, seafood, eggs and dairy products. A relaxation is permitted on the Feast of the Transfiguration, when fish may be eaten.
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the monastic typikon prescribes xerophagy — the eating of uncooked food. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the consumption of hot dishes is allowed, but without vegetable oil. On Saturdays and Sundays — hot food with vegetable oil.
As noted by the Vyatka Diocese, the main aims of the fast are a person's struggle against his or her passions, sinful thoughts and deeds. In this, prayer and acts of mercy assist alongside the fast.
Two major feasts fall during the Dormition Fast — the Procession (bringing out) of the Honorable Wood of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord (Honey Spas), which is celebrated on August 14, and the Transfiguration of the Lord (Apple Spas) — August 19.
