Two German Shepherds will serve in IK-1 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Kirov region. The puppies will replace service dogs that cannot continue to perform their duties due to health reasons or age.

So, Yelai and Emelya are 5 months old. Kids are very active, inquisitive and eat well. Soon they will start learning how to train — follow commands and overcome obstacles. After the general training course, they will receive a special course — investigative work, search and detention of criminals in open areas, as well as in transport and premises. Then the puppies will need to take an exam, said Andrey Simonov, head of the cynological service of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Kirov region.

Shepherds have a "puppy passport", a document that contains all the information about the dog and its pedigree. At the moment, kids are already getting used to the nickname, collar, leash and free range. Dog handlers help the younger generation to adapt and master the basics of the initial general training course. Soon they will face more complex tasks related to the specifics of the institution, for example, searching for a person by scent and trail, as well as operational detention. Puppies reach this level at the age of seven months.

The press service of the department added that the training of a rabid dog is an everyday workout. Dogs are trained to search for people and objects by invisible scent trails, detain, search the area and premises, as well as search for things, which requires a lot of time and perseverance from the dog handler. After a while, the dog handler and his dog learn to understand and feel each other without words.

The main tasks of dogs are to prevent escapes from under guard and to prevent the delivery of prohibited items and substances to the security area of correctional institutions.
