Increased boron content was detected in drinking water in Kirov
In Kirov, there are 40 water pipelines under Management control, of which only two use surface sources: the central part of the city is supplied with water from the Vyatka River, and the Lyangasovo microdistrict is supplied from the Bystrica River. At the same time, all water pipelines operate 104 underground water supply sources. The cold water supply of the city is provided by the Municipal Unitary Enterprise Vodokanal.
Water quality control is carried out through three areas: state control, social and hygienic monitoring and production control. As part of the social and hygienic monitoring (SGM), regular laboratory quality control of drinking water is carried out. The monitoring covers 18 points, including water supply sources and a distribution network, with monthly sampling.
In the first quarter of 2025, 765 studies on sanitary and chemical indicators and 225 studies on microbiological and parasitological indicators were conducted in the Kirov City Defense Ministry. The results showed that according to microbiological and parasitological indicators, the water meets the standards, but minor deviations in sanitary and chemical indicators were revealed — the share of unsatisfactory studies was 1.17%.
The main problem was the increased boron content, which was recorded in the centralized water supply system of the Novovyatsky district. This excess is due to the natural boron content in the underground springs.
Since 2011, the list of investigated indicators in the framework of the SGM has been expanded to include a study on the content of chloroform. According to the results of 2024, its content in the centralized water supply system of Kirov did not exceed the permissible standards. Work on monitoring the quality of drinking water in the regional center continues.
The danger of boron
In general, boron is necessary for all living organisms and plays an important role in maintaining the normal functioning of the human body. It is concentrated in bones, tooth enamel, brain, muscles, liver, lungs and kidneys. Boron strengthens bones and joints, participates in the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, regulates the nervous system and metabolism, promotes muscle growth and helps in the prevention of diseases of the spine.
However, in case of an overabundance, symptoms such as irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and nasopharynx, as well as lung damage, may appear quite quickly, experts from the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology said.
