Holy Week holds a special place in the lives of Orthodox believers. Every day of her life is connected with the last events of the Savior's earthly life and calls for repentance, prayer and inner purification.
On Holy Monday, the Church remembers the Old Testament Joseph the Beautiful as a type of Christ, as well as the parable of the barren fig tree, a symbol of a barren spiritual life. Morning and evening services are held in churches, and excerpts from the Gospel are read.
On Tuesday, there are parables about the ten virgins and the talents, reminding of vigilance and responsibility before God. This is a day of reflection on the coming Judgment and on the spiritual readiness of every Christian for it.
On Holy Wednesday, we remember the woman who anointed Christ with precious myrrh, the prototype of repentance and love. On the same day, Judas' decision to betray the Teacher for thirty pieces of silver is recalled.
Holy Thursday is dedicated to the commemoration of the Last Supper, the establishment of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. One of the most solemn services is performed in churches, including the reading of twelve gospel passages about the passion of Christ.
On Good Friday, the Church remembers the judgment, suffering, crucifixion, death and burial of the Lord. This is the strictest day of fasting, when, according to tradition, many believers refuse to eat until the evening. The removal of the Shroud is carried out in temples.
Holy Saturday is a day of silence and expectation of the Resurrection. Christ remains in the tomb, and the faithful gather in churches for the liturgy and begin preparations for the Easter celebration.
On the first day of Holy Week, divine services were held in the Assumption Cathedral of the city of Yaransk with the reading of the Gospel of the barren fig tree and the parable of the evil vinedressers. The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was led by Bishop Paisios of Yaransk and Luz. In his sermon, he recalled the importance of spiritual vigor and urged believers not to leave churches throughout the week in order to celebrate Easter with dignity.
